Dear Parent and Guardians,

A year ago, the VT Agency of Education identified Dummerston School as a school in "need of improvement" based on the results of our 2011 NECAP scores in mathematics for students in grades 3-8.  According to the requirements set by the federal government under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which requires all students reach 100% proficiency by the year 2014, we did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) toward that goal, specifically in mathematics, and were placed in a category called Year 1 School Improvement.

On August 1, 2013, Dummerston School received a letter from the VT Secretary of Education, Armando Vilaseca, congratulating us for having met 2012 AYP targets for all student groups for which we are accountable.  This means that in mathematics (our targeted area) we met the goals set forth by the VT Agency of Education and the federal government under NCLB.  Specifically, we improved our students’ performance by 10 points in mathematics and 11 points in reading.  Please take a moment to read the letter from Secretary Vilaseca, which is also on our website.

Although we are making gains in student achievement in all content areas used to determine AYP, we will continue work on our the School Improvement Plan, which we developed last year as a result of being placed in Year 1 School Improvement. As always, we are extremely proud of our community of families and students, as well as our faculty and staff.  We have created a wonderful student-centered school that is committed and dedicated to meeting the academic, social, physical, creative and emotional needs of our all our students.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do so again, this year.
